昔のコロジオンプロセスの本を読んでいたらヘッドレストの絵が出てきました。
写真を撮るときに、長くポージングをするので頭が動かないように後ろから押さえるスタンドです。
いつかほしいなーと思いつつ、たまにアンティークショップなどにひょっこり出ていないか見てみるのですが、ebayなどにもなかなか出てこない品物です。

一箇所、作ってくれそうなところにデザイン案と見積もりをおこしてもらったところ、ひとつ作るのに１５万円！　しかもこれと同じデザインは難しいとのこと。　　物価の違いはあれど当事は３ドルくらいで売っていたというので、技術的に今はなかなかできないということでしょうか。５，６年前はアメリカでもリプロダクション品が作られていたようですが、最近はほとんどないようです。とりあえず今、別なところにデザインを依頼中。

カメラもそうですが、昔の道具の方がデザインも材料もそして技術も最高のものが投入されているように思います。どうも今の資本主義の大量生産品は心を惹かれないのでした。　

I found this pictures in an old wet process collodion book. This is to hold the model’s head for longer posture for portrait shooting. I sometimes stop by antique shops to look for this but never seen this, even at ebay or other auction sites.

I asked one of the craftsmen if he can reproduce this but the price would be like $1300 and he cannot make an identical or closer designed version. It was originally sold about $3 (although other items prices were also low at that time), I assume it’s technically difficult to make things like this now. Seems there were some reproductions available in US 5~6 years ago but not for now. I’m asking another craftsman now.

I think many old tools including cameras were well designed with best materials and best craftsman skills, and I’m not very fascinated by those mass-produced items under the capitalism.

今年から湿板を初めて、いったいどのくらいガラスを注文したんだろうーと思って記録をたどってみました。 小さいのも大きいのも含めて約６００枚。
Suddenly I felt like to know how many glasses I ordered since I’ve started the wet plate process this year. It’s about 600 pcs for all sizes, from small to big.

想像以上に大量のガラスを消費していました。　８ｘ１０にいたっては１６０枚すべて使ってしまって、しかも少なくとも３０枚は２~３回使っています。　（再利用かまたオーダーしなければなりません。）
The actual number was way beyond my estimation. I’ve used up total 160 pcs for 8×10 and at least 30pcs had been re-used more than twice. I have to order or reuse them again.

このほとんどが家にあるので、重さ的に大丈夫かちょっと気になります。　
・・・・というよりこれほど大量のガラスからまともな作品がほとんど生まれていない、ということに愕然。。
Most of these glasses are at home… Hope my flat is strong enough to bear the heavy weight of them.
More than that, I feel so disappointed that I have created few good plates our of huge number of glasses…

History of photography

いまさらながら写真の歴史について本を読んでいます。　写真１３０年史となっているけれど、２０年前くらいの本。
知らなかったことがたくさん書かれています。　（というより知っていることの方が少ない。。）　学生のころ歴史が大嫌いだったけれど、写真に関してはどんどん過去にさかのぼっていく。

今私が立っているのはだいたい１８５４年くらい。　できればもう少しさかのぼりたいです。

自分が写真の何が好きなんだろう、と考えたとき、一番に思いつくのは技法。　　一からすべてを作り上げている感覚がたまらなく好きです。　デジタルでは決して表現しきれない世界がそこには広がっています。　とても物質的。　ちいさなちいさな分子までもが呼吸をして、ひとつの生命体を作り上げているような感じです。　だからコロジオンを剥がすときも悲鳴が聞こえるし、再利用するガラスには以前に撮った写真の魂がこびりついている。　何回も失敗して、その魂が何層にも重なったガラスに撮影するのが、真新しいガラスに撮影するより好きだったりします。　　　残念ながら、インターネットだとそれが伝わりませんが・・・。

This is totally mess and obviously far away from a successful plate, but this is something close enough to what I want to make. I probably don’t like the perfectness, which makes me feel scared.　(And this doll may scare you..)
ぐちゃぐちゃの完成からほど遠いプレート。　でも自分が作りたいものにとても近いです。　どうも「完璧」ということに恐ろしさを感じるみたいです。　（この人形が怖いです、という人もいるかもしれないけど。。）
