The recent plates I’ve been making are all foggy so I’ve decided to do some chemical tests to find out a cause of the problem.
Most likely one or 2 of these chemicals would make a mess.
I always suspect the silver nitrate first, as it’s being used several times and gets easily damaged although it has just got cleaned under the sun the other day. It might be the time to dump…(someone said it lasts 2 years). I checked the pH value just in case. Normally it shows pH4 but this time it was ph7. I added some glacial acetic acid and now it shows pH4.
I thought everything would be alright but still something is wrong. Normally collodion looks smooth when I dipped out the plate from the silver nitrate but this time it shows so many snaky lines.
So I tested with the collodion from 9/24 and the one newly mixed.
The images are not very impressive but not that bad.
This time, collodion was the cause of the problem.
When things don’t go well at all, I go back and newly mix all the chemicals including silver nitrate instead of trying to find out which is not working correctly. That would usually give beautiful images. I did it when I had to make the plates for exhibition but recently I do more like test shootings so I will continue to use these old chemicals.
I’m wondering why the collodin didn’t work well this time.. maybe I used cheaper cadmium or the beakers I used were not clean enough. (I cleaned and polished all the beakers after the test.)
